Default New Trump rule would deny green cards to immigrants who took food stamps, Medicaid

Article here.

Quote:
The Trump administration announced a proposed rule Saturday that would make it harder to obtain visas or green cards for immigrants already in the U.S. legally, as well as those seeking to enter, if they have ever been dependent on certain public benefits, like Medicaid, food stamps or public housing.

The proposal, which can become a rule after a public comment period
The article doesn't seem to include a link to wherever the public's supposed to submit comments.

Anybody got one?

-- plenty of people need assistance temporarily, but because of it are later able to contribute quite a bit.

Psychic

Is there necessarily one, or is it a generalized "send a letter to your congressperson" and "write an op-ed about it" sort of window?

I don't know, ASL; but "public comment period", IME, generally goes along with a formal process to submit such comments.

Trevor Noah talked about it.

It does seem to reflect an age-old tradition in America.

Anti-Immigrants: We’re not opposed to immigrants, just illegal ones.
*Proceeds to make it damn near impossible for anyone to become legal citizens.

It’s almost as though their real objection to immigrants isn’t so much because of their legal status, but to the fact that they are here, period. But what are the odds that anti-illegal immigration zealots object to immigrants, period, and hide behind a message of law-and-order to mask their bigotry.

Ah. Comment period isn't open yet, but there will be one.

The date when they're going to publish it, and the length of the comment period, aren't clear to me.

Immigrants are screwed either way; if they're not "sucking off the government teat," then it's "Oh noes, they're taking our jobzzzzz."

It’s the paradox known as Schroedinger’s Immigrant where they are simultaneously a bunch of lazy, shiftless moochers making a living off the government, AND they’re stealing jobs from hardworking Americans.

Time marches forward, trends change, but the arguments of bigots remain the same.

I'm going to make a wild, crazy prediction here and say that if this goes ahead, Günter the Pasty-Faced and Elsa the Porcelain-Skinned won't have any reason to fear despite the fact that they claimed food stamps when they first immigrated.

Well, we already know that chain migration's not a problem when it's Melania at one end of the chain.
