Australia Burger King in Australia

Comment: When Burger King expanded to Australia, the name was already
licensed to a shop in Adelaide so they called the chain Hungry Jacks

The owner of the shop was offered tons of money by BK Corp to give up the
name but refused, just to stick it to the big corporation (fact or myth?)

A search on "Burger" and "King" in the Australian IP web site (removed trademarks) returns a hit that shows that "BURGER KING" was registered to the Burger King Corporation in Miami, FL back in 1968. The Opposition link shows there was no opposition and the History link shows that the trademark was removed due to non-payment of the renewal fee.

ETA: There is a still active trademark from 1974, so if he did "stick it to them", he didn't do so for long.

None the less it Burger King here still. I am guessing that while most Australians are aware that Hungry Jacks is Australian for Burger King, they have been Hungry Jacks for so long there is no need to change.

Speculation on my part cause I have done survey to see if people are aware of the connection between HJ and BK.

I always assumed that was the reason for the name difference.

I seem to recall one at either Melbourne or Sydney airport which is branded as a Burger King, I assume for the convenience of international travellers.

Apparently there's also been a falling out between Hungry Jack's and the Burger King umbrella corporation. It ended in a court case in 2001 where Burger King Co. unsuccessfully tried to terminate the franchise contractl.

A brand owned by Pillsbury I believe, who also owned Burger King at the time they entered Australia. Jack Cowin who bought the franchise rights to Burger King was given a choice from a number of trademarks owned by Pillsbury and he chose that as it contained his name.

A local Hungry Jack's restaurant originally opened as a Burger King around 10 or so years ago. It was changed into its current name a few years later.

IIRC, the change in name was due to Burger King leaving the Australian market after the lawsuit that Gutter Monkey mentioned.
