Default Cat goes to the groomer and comes back looking like he's wearing a cat mask

https://www.thedodo.com/close-to-hom...omer-cat-mask#

Quote:
This sweet Persian cat, named Jin Jin, isn't one to shy away from the latest in quirky feline hair fashion trends but even he might agree that its gone just a little too far.

Like many owners of long-haired cats, Jin Jins owner Xie Qian Qian typically opts to have him shaved every once in a while to help keep him cool and the house less covered in shed hair. In years past, hes returned from the groomer with a cute lion-style cut, leaving the fur on his head and tail mostly untouched.

A few month back, Jin Jin was slated to visit with the groomer, but Qian was too busy to take him herself. So, she entrusted a friend to drop him off there but apparently there was some miscommunication about what sort of haircut he was to receive.

Rather his normal do, what Jin Jin received instead gave the uncanny appearance of a kitty wearing a cat mask:

More photos in the article.

So far this is being reported only on one website (the Dodo); and the story does not give a location, but the Asian names and watermarks on the photos would always make me doubt the veracity even if the photos in question didn't look ridiculously 'shopped.

Those eyes are way too big for the skull.

I'm not sure it is photoshopped. It does look very strange, but I'm not sure it looks strange in a way that's inconsistent with what it's supposed to be.

If you google 'shaved cat'* there's lots of similar photos of other cats, although not with haircuts quite as severe as that one

There's also animals with the reverse situation:

Fluffy animals looks weird underneath all that fluff. People were apparently surprised to discover that owls have very long legs underneath all those feathers:

I'm still not convinced. Those eyes in the first pic look like they're not set evenly with the skull.

Also, if the cat was brown with darker stripes, the shaved cat would also have that look, wouldn't it? The shaved cat part is just gray. And it's not shaved to the skin like a hairless cat. The hair isn't gray that changes color to brown and black/brown on a cat, is it?

It's been a while since I examined cat hair closely.

If you look at the article, there is a before photo where the body looks more gray.

It's a Persian. They have a flatter face.
Here is a side view.

It's a bad haircut, I'd say!

I've given some heat to my dog groomer when she trimmed my Aussie's cheeks. It look grey and dull. I did not go back there.

Ash is a big floofy kitty who's had a similar cut, although they didn't get quite so close to the face. He looked like a stick figure with a real cat head stuck on when he had that cut. Poor kitty!

TGG's pic is pretty much what Toulousie used to look like when we had to have him shaved for mats. Except his tail was shaved, with just a hairy tuft at the end.

I know what lion cuts look like. The OP, however, is an extreme thing I've never seen and it appears that even the insides of the ears have been shaved. I have never heard of a groomer doing that and I don't know why someone would, barring a medical condition (in which case surely a vet would shave them, no?) The cat would need sedation as well if the ears were shaved.

I don't think the photos are necessarily photoshopped, but that does not mean that the story goes with the photos, or is at all true. I suspect the story may be false, actually.

So, it could be a cat shaved by a vet under sedation for some medical reason.

Or, it could be a cat shaved by someone with no experience, or no business, shaving cats. Or for amusement, or to be a jerk.

As for the sedation question, I would think it would depend a great deal on the cat. My Cleo was a big scared you cat about many things, but she was always extremely docile about clippers. I often, in the last year's of her life, shaved mats off of her myself, because it was far less traumatic to her than taking her to a groomer. I could shave the mats around her cheeks and on her neck without anyone assisting me.

So, with someone to scruff her and wrap her in a towel, I suspect that if I'd ever needed to shave her ears it might have been somewhere between not so bad and difficult but possible.

It is a strange enough haircut that I hope there was a good reason for it, and not just that someone was being a jerk, or, as suggested in the story, incompetent.

It's easy to go too far to the head and get things looking quite wrong. Look at Barley's head and face:

I also don't think Cervus assumed anyone assumed anything about her knowledge of lion cuts; she was just prefacing what she said with a comment to say she knew what she was talking about.

He probably didn't care but liked the fact that he was cooler. The trick is to stop just before the "knowledge bump".

He's had a worse haircut (shall we call it a 'plucking') and much better ones.

Yeah, I lived in the country and we had a stray Persian cat with large knots wonder up. We paid to have her fur shaved to make her more comfortable and she ended up looking a lot like that poor dog.
