Odd fact: although "Night of the Living Dead" greatly influenced the genesis of the modem zombie apocalypse genre, the undead are not called "zombies" in the film.

The creatures in his film are closer to draugr or ghouls than to zombies as a classic zombie was not undead.

As Romero said, the undead are a means of getting the living actors motivated and showing their actions, plans and foibles. Or in Hitchcockian terms, they are the mcguffin.
