I guess Thamsanqa Jantjie is working for ABC now.

It must be hard to translate an obscure language like French into English. I mean, they have separate genders for their words and all. How do you handle that?
(I must admit that I did get about a C+ average in French in junior high.) |

They can't be bothered to link the video? I actually wanted to hear what he said.

Clearly he was reciting Christmas Carols after running through Google Translate. Must be a Sekrit Snopester.

The translator was using an iPhone and forgot to turn off autocorrect.

I haven't watched the video--is it possible that the automatic closed-captioning (that's with a d at the end; it isn't close-captioning, OP article writer) was not set up to translate at all? In other words, it was phonetically trying to recognize English words when the input it was getting was French words? Just looking at the output, that seems likely to me.

I don't think this was closed captioning, but English subtitles in the normal broadcast.

Also, there are a few screen caps here that I don't think are in the OP. |

I think its a voice to text working off a combination of Trudeau and the verbal translator. You can see this in that before the translator starts it looks like English homonyms, but right as the translator begins, when Trudeau is silent for a pause, the text is exactly right for what the translator is saying.

I read it as closed captioning that was set to English rather than set to French to translate to English. And that was definitely what it seemed to be from the video, too.

Now that I've seen the video I think Beachlife!'s probably right. I had mistakenly assumed Trudeau was speaking French with subtitles in the broadcast providing an English translation earlier. I didn't realize Trudeau and a French translator were speaking at the same time.

You're right. They were open, not closed captions. But my point was that it was automated captioning.
