Default Adolf Hitler 'did shake hands with Jesse Owens'

A veteran German sports reporter has claimed that Adolf Hitler did in fact shake hands with black US athlete Jesse Owens at the 1936 Berlin Olympics.

It would have been impossible. Hitler only shook hands with one (German) athlete on the first day, and was told by the IOC he either had to congratulate everyone, or no one. He chose no one.

Hitler did leave the stadium on the first day (before the warning) just before Cornelius Johnson was to receive his medal, but that may just have been a quirk in scheduling (some reports have said that Hitler had planned to leave at that time anyway), and even if not, Hitler at that point was only interested in congratulating Germans.

There was no time at which Hitler and Owens were close enough to actually shake hands.

Owens said that he waved at Hitler and that Hitler waved back, but nothing about a handshake. It seems likely the news report is confusing that claim.
