Tantrum "Facts I don't agree with" = opinion

Comment: I appreciate the research done on the various subjects, but I
heartily disagree with Mr or Ms Mikkelson inserting any personal comments.
When I check out stories, it isn't to find out how the author feels or
what the author thinks about a subject, it's to find out facts, if they
exist. Leave your personal comments out!! You don't speak for me, and I
doubt you speak for anyone else. There is just too much of the
self-opinionism going on these days, and it needs to STOP!

I'm surprised you don't get a lot more of these snopes. Sadly it's a pretty common mentality these days. A lot of people think that their view are self actualizing, i.e. the very fact that they hold them is enough to validate them, regardless of how well reality supports them. And any time a view of reality that contradicts theirs is introduced to them it is quickly rationalized away as merely an opposing opinion so they don't have to deal with it.

As someone a lot smarter then me once said "Everyone is entitled to their own opinions, but they are not entitled to their own facts."

We do; I just don't usually post them here.

It's even funnier (or sadder) that when we vet or debunk the attributed authorship of a pure opinion piece, people criticize us for not declaring whether the piece is "true" or not. But when we analyze the accuracy of an article that purports to make factual claims, people complain that they just want to know who wrote the original and that they don't care about our "opinions."

That's not a Stalin quote, it's from former US Senator Patrick Moynihan.

I know it's not a Stalin quote. I was calling you Uncle Joe merely to add to the humour of implying that you were un-American for suggesting that people did not have the right to their own facts by implying a connection to Communism.

Well, that joke's dead now.

I propose that we start using this word to mean, "facts I find inconvenient".

No I think "bias" already covers that.

I like the editorializing in the analysis of what a given UL says about our culture. Of course, when I come across one I used to believe and helped spread, it's embarrassing to realize I was revealing my own racism/sexism/xenophobia/pick your prejudice. I suspect that gets under other people's skin as well, and the less enlightened write in to complain about the discomfort.

Comment: Please help me with Barrack Obama. I believe that he comes
across as a well meaning intelligent upcoming young politician. However,
I need for HIM to interview with someone who will not politically benefit,
like a truthful and REAL writer, not democratic or republican or involved
in politics or concerned about any Black or White issues, maybe an
intelligent American Indian. Personally, I no longer trust the American
Media to print the facts about anything, only the twisted views and
opinions AS THEY SEE. Why can't they just tell the FOOTNOTED FACTS and
let the INTELLIGENT American public use their own minds??? Anyway Barrack
needs to say for himself - Where, who, when, why and how you believe?
DID a muslim man L.Soetoro raise you in Jakarta as a extremist
(Wahabbi)who are now waging Jihad(war) on the industrialized world. Is
his mother Ann Dunham an Atheist from Witchita?

THIS IS SO IMPORTANT TO THE AMERICAN PEOPLE. TRUTH!!!!!

Apparently his two full-length autobiographies weren't sufficient.

Because, of course, Native Americans are completely unaffected by, and therefore have absolutely no interest in, U.S. politics and racial issues.

D'oh!

Comment: I was bothered by your response to the article "New Immigrants." Instead of the usual detached facts I usually find, this response is essentially a rebuttal to the political position of the original email.

I don't really care to hear another opinion on the immigration issue. Is the email "real" or not? Does David Labonte exist? Was the letter ever submitted to the Orange County Register? Just the facts, please.

I've come to expect better of Snopes than this.

Comment: New US Dollars. If you believe your own words I have a bridge
I'd like to sell you. Mis-print is rather convenient isn't it. Most of
your stuff is good but it isn't always gospel. Sorry.

From the Gospel of snopes:

Lo, I say unto you, verily, that it did happen in the town that there was a rumour, and that rumour was of a gold coin in which the standard prayer was omitted; when thou sayest to thine brother that there is a gold coin in which the standard prayer was omitted, art thou awarest that thou art telling thine brother a falsehood? And snopes entered the town, and those that sayest to He, there is a gold coin in which the standard prayer was omitted, He did gently correct, telling them, there is no gold coin in which the standard prayer was omitted. And snopes begat Silas Sparkhammer, who begat Canuckistan, who begat MapleLeaf....

Speak for yourself! Do you know how much pain I went through to begat MapleLeaf?

And does he thank me? Nooooo. He stays out till all hours. He never even thinks to call me just to let me know he's okay!

Well, I have feelings, too!
