Borg Ozzie has metal fingers

Comment: I've heard rumors over the years and again just recently, that
Ozzie Osborne had metal fingertips (that he made himself at his job - a
metal plant in England somewhere) due to an accident at work when he was a
teen. He accidentally cut off 2 fingertips and after they healed he
capped them with the metal tips he made. Supposedly this is where the
"eerie" metal sound began. All the pictures I've ever seen seem to show
10 healthy fingers, someone mentioned once they saw it on a documentary on
Ozzie.

No it's true I'm afraid. Due to the pathetic nature of our ebil socialised medicine we are forced to manufacture our own prosthetics, using whatever we can cobble together at work.

I myself have a penis made out of spare parts from an IBM 4501 MICR reader.

Actually, this story is about Tony Iommi who was the guitar player in Black Sabbath, Ozzy's first band. He cut of two finger tips on his fret hand and spent a period of time in a depression about how he would ever be able to play guitar again. Then he was told of Django Reinhardt, the noted jazz guitarist, who had leather tips made for his hand to replace missing tips on his fingers. Iommi made a couple of plastic tips made that allowed him to play again without pain. But to compensate, he had to tune his guitar 1/2 step lower to make the strings eaisier to play. A happy side effect was that the lower tuning created a darker, gloomier sound that became a hallmark for Black Sabbath.

Ozzy does not play an instrument, so metal fingertips would serve little purpose.

The comment is oh-so-close. Tony Iommi lost the tips of the middle and ring fingers on his right hand, on his last day of work at a sheet metal factory. He was encouraged to keep up with his guitar playing by his boss, who played a Django Reinhardt record for him. If memory serves, Iommi made his first fingertips out of plastic covered in leather.

(Note, it may have been a fairly well known song, but it's NSFW/NFBSK. Eddy, you may be British but if you're a school kid you should not watch)

Maybe you should tell this guy how you did it. I saw it in Active Topics right before I opened this thread.

Sorry to nit-pick, wasn't Ozzy's first band or Sabbath originally called Earth? I gotta dig up my guitar mags as I've got a great interview with Tony all about his fingers, which fing quiet well considering. Another advantage that dropping the tuning 1 & 1/2 steps has is that Ozzy could hit 'higher' notes, without singing higher. That was written horribly, but you know what I mean, like a how a capo works, but in reverse (that should clear it up haha).

The disadvantage is that if you want to jam along to the songs, you have to retune or it sounds funny but at least it teaches you about different tunings etc. etc. etc.

True, but it was the same band with a different name, so I'm not sure how you would classify that. I have also heard it was called Polka Tulk at one time. Noe there is a name that would have carried them to the top!

Yes true true. I also read in an interview years ago that Ozzie was getting his arm tatooed to look like a robot arm because his son (Jack) was really into robots. From memory, I don't think he ever completed or started it. That might have added to the metal finger thing but my money is on Tony.

P.S - Leaving guitar mags in a leaky shed isn't a good way of keeping them in a readable condition.

I could be wrong, but I don't think Django lost the fingertips to any fingers, but two of his fingers were partially paralized in a fire. I don't think he had a need for leather fingertips.

You are right. I stand corrected.
