My unit is one of the very few in Canada to have an official mascot. The Royal 22nd Regiment (the Vandoos) have a goat. We have a dog.

Here is some of my unit wearing our jerseys for Humboldt and our mascot, Loki, in the front row.

Loki has an official rank (Gunner, hence the stripe on his tunic) and is in reality a trained support dog to help one of our number.

If you are looking for me, I'm kneeling behind the fellow in the Ottawa jersey holding Loki.

I see no toques, nor is anyone holding Tim Horton's.

PS. That dude's got a Pens jersey. Who let the 'Merican in?

What is your ... comrade? colleague? What's the correct term? ... on the left holding (front row, third from Loki)? It looks like it may be a ramrod, which would be appropriate, but is it?

Don Enrico judging from the "poles" the banner is mounted to, I'm guessing it's a hockey stick, just turned edge on.

Sorry for not replying sooner. I have been busy this weekend.

The tragedy in Saskatchewan has manifested itself in many ways. One was the Jersey day (hence the photo) on 12 April where Canadians all across the country put on a sports jersey to honour the players and members of the Humboldt Broncos organisation who perished in that accident, and help the community understand that they are supported.

Another way was to leave a hockey stick outside your door "in case the boys need them". So, many of us brought sticks to work that day and put them outside our office doors.

And some brought them to the photo.

He's the Regimental Sergeant Major. He's a bit off.

Just kidding.

He grew up in the same neighbourhood as Mario Lemieux (perhaps the most famous Penguin) and has been pretty well a lifetime fan.

Thanks for the information! And my condolence to the friends and relatives of those who died in the acident, as well as to all Canadians!

Looking up the English word for "Ladestock" lead me down a Wikipedia-rabbithole of the history of naval artillery. I thought maybe even a landbased gunner might appreciate that.

Hello Kitty

I was taking photos of an old steamer trunk so I could post them to a local "rough trade" barter page on FB and of course Josie Rose had to get in on the act:

Edit: I don't know if anyone will take up my offer, my requested trades might be a bit too specific

This past weekend, we acquired a genuine Mexican Pirate Cat. (Name pending). https://imgur.com/gallery/wdlbow2

He was rescued from Mexico by someone from a rescue up here. He had an eye injury that the Mexican shelter he was in was not able to treat. After he came up here, he had surgery to remove his injured eye. Then, being in a small rescue, and being a black cat with one eye, he stayed in the rescue for a long time. When I found him, he was in a large cage at a pet food store to try to get him seen by potential adopters, and he'd been there for a month.

He's super sweet, and very brave/relaxed. On his second day here, he not only had a successful meeting with Gracie -- they played, too. He has no depth perception, and he's pretty clumsy when jumping. He hasn't ventured above the first level of the big cat tree.

We're so happy to be giving this awesome kitty a home.

What a beautiful cat, erwins!

And I love that second photo. He looks so happily settled in. 'Ah, finally! What a great place to have landed up in!'

Yep! I really wonder about his background. He was in a shelter in Mexico City, picked up as a stray in an area that was devastated by the earthquake. The timing and the damage made the vet think his eye injury could have occurred in the quake.

I wonder if he did briefly have a home before that. He just seems like a kitty who had a home and lost it (and really appreciates finding one again), rather than one who never had one before.

Some name candidates: Odin, Gus, Jackie Paper, Zelig, Ariel (nickname Ari), Ollie. We're trying them out to see what sticks. Gus has a long list of things it could be short for, the best of which are Argus, Asparagus, and Gaspar.

They are. I can already picture them conspiring against us.

After writing that list of names, during which Ollie popped into my head, I'm really leaning toward Ollie (Possibly short for Olive, since he looks like a round black olive -- he is quite plump at the moment). I'll have to wait and see what everyone else thinks, though. Gracie and Ollie make a good pair, too....

That's an awesome picture and explanation GM. That first pic up above, with the rays of sunlight going across is very cool too.

Well, I was going to suggest Jack Sparrow but GM beat me. I think the irony of a cat named after a bird is interesting. But then you should consider his Mexican heritage especially since Cinqo de Mayo is coming up. Maybe Pancho Villa? I don't know of any Mexican pirates.

And Gustavo, given his Mexican heritage. As long as you don't mind him also being associated with a villain from Breaking Bad. Although drug kingpin and pirate are kind of similar lines of work if you think about it.

There's probably less musicals about drug kingpins
