Icon81 300 percent mortality rate surgery

Comment: Dr. Robert Liston having done a 2.5 minute surgery with a 300%
mortality rate:

Amputated the leg in under 2-1⁄2 minutes (the patient died afterwards in the ward from hospital gangrene; they usually did in those pre-Listerian days). He amputated in addition the fingers of his young assistant (who died afterwards in the ward from hospital gangrene). He also slashed through the coat tails of a distinguished surgical spectator, who was so terrified that the knife had pierced his vitals he dropped dead from fright.

That was the only operation in history with a 300 percent mortality.

The surgery could only have a 300% mortality rate if the particular surgery killed three people every time it was performed. I haven't heard that to be the case with leg amputations, regardless of the method.

I remember this one from the Guinness Book of World Records for fastest amputation of a limb. According to the entry the amputation took 33 seconds and Dr. Liston did cut off three fingers of his assistant in the process. In the pre-anesthesia days it was thought the faster the amputation the better the chance for survival.

It reminds me of when Anna Nicole Smith's son died visiting her in the hospital. I asked rhetorically, "How bad does a hospital have to be if they lose patients who aren't even patients?"
