Has anyone here read "The Hiram Key"? It's a pretty silly book, although I did find it wildly entertaining, and it gives a really, really imaginative explanation of the chemical process by which the shroud *could* have been formed. Basically, they claim that some guy was tortured by flogging and nailing, then wrapped up in a shroud to further humiliate him, and the fact that he was steaming off proteins from the stress of the torture impregnated the cloth. They also have a really neat way to account for the false perspective on the "front" side.

Now I don't happen to think they're correct - modern considered opinion is a painting, and I'm not about to argue with those people - but I appreciate the thought that went into the book's explanation.

Thoughts?

Read This! Researcher says she found text on Shroud of Turin

ROME – A Vatican researcher claims she has found a nearly invisible text on the Shroud of Turin and says the discovery proves the authenticity of the artifact revered as Jesus' burial cloth.

I guess we'll hear later why the text, if it is there, isn't also a forgery.

What does the text say: Property of Jesus?

No, it's some sort of tag with writing in Chinese stapled to the cloth.

The tag says: "WARNING: This shroud does not enable wearer to walk on water."

He wouldn't have been able anyway at that time because of the holes through his feet.

Roll eyes Jesus Christ's 'death certificate' found on Turin Shroud

Barbara Frale, a Vatican researcher, claims to have discovered Christ's 'death certificate' on the Turin Shroud.

The historian and researcher at the secret Vatican archive said she has found the words "Jesus Nazarene" on the shroud, proving it was the linen cloth which was wrapped around Christ's body.

It's not the only one by any means. I went to the Topkapı Palace in Istanbul, and although there were no "Jesus" relics that I saw (possibly because it's an Islamic country), in one unexpected museum they had David's sword, John the Baptist's staff I think, somebody else's turban / hat, as well as half Mohammed's beard and rooms full of things from other saints, all suspiciously new-looking, and clearly not real to anybody who cares about actual reality rather than symbolism. (Well, there's a chance that some of the bits of Mohammed's beard might have been real I suppose; unlike the True Cross at least beards regrow so maybe he was constantly giving away clippings during his lifetime.)

Full and complete proof. Obviously no-one who was going to the trouble of faking the thing would ever have thought of putting that little finishing touch on.

Icon102 Shroud of Turin Not Jesus', Tomb Discovery Suggests

From a long-sealed cave tomb, archaeologists have excavated the only known Jesus-era burial shroud in Jerusalem, a new study says.

The discovery adds to evidence that the controversial Shroud of Turin did not wrap the body of Christ, researchers say.
