Maybe he told his daughter that he used to be a gangster (with a different name?) but he was a nice friendly gangster who just made tea and sandwiches for the other gangsters and delivered shopping to their grannies if they were too busy gangstering to do it themselves. It sounds more that he's upset that the program alleged he'd killed 20 people, rather than just the 4 he'd officially admitted to, and she found that out from the TV. Or maybe she'd reconciled herself to the 4 murders but was upset about the other 16?
