Default Koko, the gorilla who mastered sign language, dead at 46

Koko, the gorilla who mastered sign language, has died. The Gorilla Foundation says the 46-year-old western lowland gorilla died in its sleep at the foundation's preserve in California's Sana Cruz mountains on Tuesday.

I guess it was natural causes; isn't mid 40s-early 50s the usual life span for gorillas? RIP Koko--you were amazing, and the bond you had with All Ball and All Ball II was really something special.

I'm mildly irked that all the articles about this refer to Koko as "it" rather than "her." Koko was a female gorilla, she should be referred to with female pronouns.

Here you go, crocoduck_hunter:

Female pronouns; and recognition in general of work done by Koko, not just about Koko.

I need to see if I can find a brilliant documentary about Koko that I saw a couple of years ago. Hopefully it will be rebroadcast.

It’s amazing how much awareness she demonstrated. Upt o and including lying. She once blamed her Kitten for ripping a sink off the wall!

I'm old enough to have been taught with books that insisted non-human animals be referred to with neuter pronouns. Koko certainly did earn her use of feminine pronouns, though!
