Icon86 A steady diet of food myths

I was a paranoid child. While other children fretted over ghost stories, I had nightmares about an eccentric family friend who once told me over ice cream sundaes that the ubiquitous, red-dyed maraschino cherries crowning my banana split would stain the lining of my stomach and glow, lurid and electric, until long after I was dead and buried. Thanks to, a mostly reliable encyclopaedic reference guide to urban legends, sceptics and bored recipients of e-mail forwards in the spirit of the legendary Kidney Heist, the thousand-dollar chocolate chip cookie recipe, or the deadly soda can lids laced with Leptispirosis-spiked rat urine now have a source for credibility checks and possible rebuttal.

As a kid I used to believe that watermelon seed one. Any kind of seed would grow in your stomach. I was also told that swallowing gum of any kind would constipate me because it would all form one solid gum wall in my guts.

I used to believe that swallowing gum (or fingernails) would lead to some horrible digestive ailment, either a massive gum build-up or appendicitis.

My mom currently has a list of "negative calorie" foods that take more calories to digest than they contain. Wonder if it really works...
