Most of the meme's suggest (or outright claim) that the people aren't really poor (I'm guessing the meme creators have a Dickensian view of what poor is) so Christian charity wouldn't apply in their mind. Sometimes I hear the claim that they support charity through Christian methods, but not "forced" charity through the government.

I think some of them have a mentality from an environment where, if something horrible befalls you, your fellow churchmembers rally around to support you (bring meals, help out in other ways, possible financial support). Which is great, except a) not everyone belongs to a church/congregation b) that's not always enough to figuratively, or literally, pay the bills.

And c), broke people are often part of broke communities; so their friends/family/community members/church members may be no more able to pay the bills than they are.

Not to mention d) which is that in some cases, even when such help is available, it comes with very large strings attached -- repent and say that you deserve to be repeatedly shamed by the church/rest of the family/ etc., or no help for you, you reprobate! Not every person or group offering help behaves like this, of course; but some of them do.

Yup..being a widow/er with children is good . And worthy of limited support.

Being a single parent otherwise is sinful and deserves to be punished.

as far as I can tell anyway

"A lawmaker wants to make castration mandatory for child sex offenders. Fair?"

The poster says "Hell Yes!"

(Totally disregarding the fact that the real problem is farther north, if you get my drift.)

Reminds me of an old work colleague of mine who couldn't understand why we'd suggest purchasing DVDs to put in a Christmas basket our group was donating to a needy family. Why would poor people have a DVD player*? If they can afford that they can't possibly be poor .

*In his limited defense this was back in a time when a DVD player was relatively expensive, at least not super cheap anyway.

United States

It was ANZAC Day here in Australia yesterday so the patriotism was flowing on Facebook. I spotted this winner:

I had to point out to them that pledging allegiance to the flag is an American thing, we've never done that here in Australia. If we do pledge allegiance then it's to the Queen, our head of state.

On the original page the creator of the image wrote "A remake of one found on the internet..."
They obviously found an American meme and changed it to an Australian meme without checking their facts too closely.

Also any meme that start with "I don't care if I offend anyone by this" is awfully obnoxious.

I just watched a video a friend of mine posted on facebook yesterday that featured a guy in a pickup truck ranting about how kids today aren't allowed to say the pledge of allegiance anymore, and that's what's wrong with our country, because we aren't allowed to say we love America anymore.

Where do these people get this stuff?????? I've been between two districts, and I know that's a really small sample, but like, ignoring everything else I took issue with in the rant, kids still say the pledge of allegiance. So where did the video guy get the idea kids aren't "allowed" to say it anymore?

Of course he does. He'd LOVE to offend someone with this. If he doesn't, he'd be disappointed!
