Blow Your Top Beloved Comic Book Character Archie to Die in Upcoming Issue

Archie Andrews, everyone's favorite, freckled denizen of Riverdale, will die a hero's death in an upcoming issue of Life With Archie, as he sacrifices his life to save a friend's, the CBC reports.

The story will help conclude the Life With Archie series, which publisher Archie Comics relaunched in 2010 to follow the lives of Archie, his love interests Betty Cooper and Veronica Lodge, best friend Jughead Jones and frenemy Reggie Mantle after they've graduated from high school and college.

Default Spoiler Alert!

Oh well I guess it's too much to expect Archie Comics to forego that kind of publicity.

Don't worry, it's not teenage Archie who is being killed off, it's alternate timeline grown-up Archie.

Not fully spoilerish though as Rolling Stone graciously do not tell us whether Archie dies in the Veronica or the Betty timeline. :-)

Life With Archie has been a good fun series, I've enjoyed the art and the stories speculating on how life might be for the Archie gang if they actually did grow up. Will be sorry to see it finish up.

ETA: When I saw the subject line I assumed Archie would die in the Afterlife with Archie series where Riverdale gets invaded by zombies ...

Meh, dying while doing something heroic...now, if his wife Betty/Veronica caught him in bed with his lover Veronica/Betty and shot them both, that would be a comic book.

Archie should have died an old man. Because there's nothing more heroic than finishing everything that you set out to do, growing old and useless, and dying on your own bed surrounded by loved ones.

What I heard is that he's going to die the same way in both timelines...

And I thought there already was an Archie Zombies series?

Now I'm even more happy I never bothered to seek out any of the Life with Archie comics. To me he is eternally 17 (16?) and that's just fine.

Yes 'Afterlife with Archie' is the zombie series but not sure if they completed the story or if it's still running, which is why I thought maybe he would die in that one.

I'm a bit disappointed if they do kill off archie in both timelines but whatever. The series has given me a lot of pleasant diversion, the ending won't change that. Even if they do leave a whole bunch of loose ends to dangle. I've enjoyed the story and the art but then I'm an archie tragic, been reading this stuff almost all my life :-). It's been a window into an alien world of kitsch Americana. I love how the characters have changed so much over the years and yet stayed essentially the same.

Nah, they'll do - until they become old and useless.

Beloved Comic Book Character {insert name here} to Die in Upcoming Issue.

Pretty much an event of every comic series, ever.

They're unnatural, and therefore cause autism.

I'm actually super bummed about it. The Life With Archie series was a really gutsy move from them and let the writers actually tell deeper stories about the characters instead of just vomiting up the same plot over and over while nothing ever changes except the fashions.

It's a surprising way to do it though - I'm shocked to see Archie just up and take a bullet.

I'd be surprised if there isn't another surprise tucked in there, the way they hid the genesis of this series with an "Archie Finally Chooses!" announcement.

Also why would you even touch something that's made of chemical compounds?

I haven't followed the adult Archie comics except when someone posts on them here, but I'm irked by the notion that the only way to move a teen comic into the adult world is to make everything super dark and kill characters off. Funky Winkerbean did the same thing, to the point that there's now a blog with a monthly recap of the previous month's 10 most depressing strips.

Yeesh. I stopped reading it in the 80's because it was boring; apparently I missed the slide into disturbing (which I think I would have liked a lot more, back then).

Default Lena Dunham to Write 4-Part 'Archie Comics' Story

First HBO, now the funny pages: Lena Dunham is writing a four-part story for the Archie comic series.

According to Comic Book Resources, the Girls star/writer/creator was recruited by newly hired Chief Creative Officer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa after Dunham publicly expressed admiration for the comic series in a Q&A with J.J. Abrams and novelist Doug Dorst last November in New York City.

I never cared for Archie, even as a kid, but I love Girls, and I admire this young woman's accomplishments so much that I may have to check out at least the first issue.
