Icon220 The secret behind African "fairy circles"

The forces behind the mysterious “fairy circles” that dot a desert in southern Africa do not appear to be supernatural, but they are intricate and complex.

The formations are circles of land dozens of feet wide that create a stunning pattern in the Namib desert and have mystified locals and scientists for ages. Inside the circles it looks like nothing is growing, while plants grow well on the land surrounding them. Similar patterns have also been seen in Australia.

I could've sworn they've known it was termites forever (or at least a very long time).

My impression from the article is that termites have been one of the theories for a long time, but that termites alone may not explain the results; it's the interaction of termites with specific other species that does it.

I wonder whether they also looked at fungal populations in the soil? what's going on underground is often very complicated, and turns out quite often to also involve fungi.
