United Kingdom Arrest over Salisbury Cathedral Magna Carta theft attempt

A hammer-wielding man has been arrested after an attempted smash and grab of a Magna Carta from its display at Salisbury Cathedral.

Alarms went off when the would-be thief tried to break through the glass box which protects the charter on Thursday.

The suspect was held on suspicion of attempted theft of the document - claimed to be the best preserved of four original Magna Cartas.

When I saw "arrest" and "Salisbury" in the same sentence I was thinking it was going to be related to the poisonings of the former Russian spy and his daughter.

Baseball

I lived in Salisbury when I was in the UK.

I don't know where he would have been trying to take it. I suspect he just wanted to destroy it.

My gut feel it is a "become famous" scenario.

That is too bad.

I had a similar thought. What was he planning to do with the Magna Carta after you've stolen it? It almost sounds like something that would be stolen in a Carmen Sandiego game.

This really confused me as I’d seen the Magna Carta last week in the British Library. Turns out there’s at least 4 copies of it. The more you know!

Or the next Dan Brown novel (to be made into a new Tom Hanks movie).
