Default Ivanka Trump used a personal email account to send hundreds of emails

Ivanka Trump sent hundreds of emails last year to White House aides, Cabinet officials and her assistants using a personal account, many of them in violation of federal records rules, according to people familiar with a White House examination of her correspondence.

I especially like the "I didn't know you are not supposed to do that" excuse. Wasn't she present at some of her fathers rallies, with the crouds shouting "lock her up" because of Mrs. Clinton's use of a private e-mail server?

You didn't expect her to actually pay attention to anything her father says, did you?

No, not really, but I did expect the White House advisors to come up with a better excuse than that.

Why? It's not like Trump supporters are going to care how good the excuse is so long as they have one to cling to. And non-Trump supporters don't matter to the Trumps.

That's the thing about "ass", though. A lot of the expressions calling people an ass work in the UK ("You silly ass!" is something that one of the Famous Five might have said) but in that context, ass means donkey.

In the past, there would have been more ambiguity between "ass" and "arse" in the UK as well, and I think that's a good ambiguity, but for whatever reason the word "donkey" came in to reduce the confusion. I had always thought that Americans continued some of that ambiguity - which I think is a good thing, in this case.

The ambiguity definitely still applies in the original phrase - "Ignorance of the law is no excuse, you ass" (approximately what was meant, I think) echoes the phrase "The law is an ass", which has probably had a pleasing ambiguity for a long time, but really means "donkey".

If you insist on the distinction between "asinum" and "culo" then you're removing that. Which I suppose is the fault of Latin, rather than English. The wordplay that we're after doesn't work in Latin.

But if you have to translate English phrases to do with the law and involving the word "ass" into Latin, then the "donkey" connotation, and so "asinum", might be better. Or so I think, anyway, speaking as a complete arse.

This may be the sharpest, and oddest, turn that a thread has taken in quite some some, possible ever taken.

It was beautifully done, especially since it was related to the prior discussions, but went off in a very intelligent way. Darn, them English folks are bright.

I mentioned John Oliver in another thread and it turned into a discussion of koala chlamydia.

Also I recall a thread that started with the mother of all Rule 6 violations and ended up discussing the way elbows bend. Probably with cookies involved as well. Oh, and whether or not Jenn vibrates.

What they’re ignoring is that Hillary not only had a good reason to use her own server (the system is broken beyond repair), but actually set it up explicitly for that purpose.
