Fright

There is a hideous monster lurking in my bedroom... it's a great and evil thing, lurking in the shadows at the foot of the bed... its mouth yawns wide showing its gruesome maw and hundreds of teeth... Marmalade is bravely investigating... my open suitcase...

Dear Marmie,

It's just a suitcase, kitten... it won't hurt you. I promise. As a matter of fact, it'll soon be full of nice comfy clothes that you can nestle down in. Just ask Ash! He knows. He does that all the time when I bring the suitcase out.

Sincerely,
TGG

Dear TGG,

But what if it's The Luggage?

-- Marmalade

[ETA: Anyway, suitcases are genuinely terrifying. Suitcases mean The Human is Going Away. -- Ash]

We searched our yard and the alley and around the neighbors last night as well as calling her name and shaking her food dish. We're hoping she goes into her old habits and shows up at the back door this evening for food. (She was a stray that we rescued out of the backyard, evening was when we would put food out for her and her brother.) She's still a bit skittish about too much contact so we are trying to limit our traipsing around for fear it will send her into deep hiding. I'll let you all know if anything changes.

She is. And thankfully, I am cautious (paranoid) enough that she has all her shots, even those that are not seen as necessary for indoors-only cats.

Yes. Gemma our Labrador knew what suitcases meant. Well when Mum was packing a suitcase anyway. She couldn't see when I was packing a suitcase (in a part of the house she wasn't allowed in) and beside while technically being "my" dog (she was my sweet sixteen present) she was my Mum girl.

Dear Iris -- Yes, I noticed how much you like the new fleecy throw I brought home yesterday. You look lovely sitting on it, too. But the thing is, I bought it to keep me warm. You're welcome to share it by sitting next to me (I know you're not a lap kitty), but I'm not going to stop using it just because you glare at me. -- love, the annoying human

Nothing yet. Have combed the neighborhood and enlisted the neighbor kids to search too (last saw her heading towards their yard). They have 7 dogs so my fear is that they either scared her away or worse. Filed a missing cat report with her chip company. Unfortunately she was too skittish to collar so the chip is the only way to ID her.

Thanks for the update. Hopefully she comes wandering home like nothing happened at all, like our cat used to.

Dear Fritz,
When you drop your fishy into the crack of the recliner, it is sort of gone. Don't give me the pathetic look, asking me to get it back. Ok, I will totally get it back, but stop dropping it in there. That game never goes well.

Seconding that.

I once had a cat show up back home after close to three months gone. I was outside calling a different cat in, when I heard the mew, and thought wait -- that voice -- is that -- and sure enough, it was: running toward me in bounds, one loud mew with every bound.

Me too, GenYus. I hope she comes sauntering in with an air of mystery.
