Hawaii 5-0 (the original; no idea if the recent redo uses the same song or a variant). Still used at parties; it is certainly a bit of a blood-stirrer.

Edit: probably not really in the running, but I was always a fan of the Kolchak: The Night Stalker theme song.

On the other hand, The Prisoner's theme song kicked a$$!

Another instrumental, Mission Impossible.

And now that it's stuck in your head, you're welcome!

Ok not the best probably but the most memorable: The Brady Bunch, The Partridge Family and The Mary Tyler Moore Show. "Talkin' 'bout my generation" .

This was an episode of the "The List" on VH1 back in the day.

May I make a rather unorthodox nomination for the instrumental category from that very episode?

60 minutes. It is simple, instills a sense of anticipation, and is instantly recognized.

I'll second Hawaii 5-0. That would have been my first pick.

I'll also add The Mod Squad.

I would nominate "Unknown Stuntman" from The Fall Guy. I base this mostly on the fact that the star of the show, Lee Majors, actually sang it. He is far from a good singer, but it really worked for the show.

In the same vein, "Those Were the Days" from All in the Family. Both of them were horrible singers, but it seems to nail the show so well.

"How Do You Talk to an Angel" from The Heights probably deserves a mention, since it was a Billboard number 1 hit.

For instrumental, I think "Suicide is Painless" from M*A*S*H is about as good as it gets. It immediately conjures up the show for me.

Does the "bum-bum" from Law and Order count?

Those are two theme songs that I have recently had stuck in my head for no particular reason.

Anyone remember Hardcastle and Mccormick? Very 80's, Stephen J. Cannell in look and in theme song.

The other day, the Fame theme song came on and I just automatically did the Debbie Allen spoken bit during the instrumental. 'right here's where you start paying, in sweat'

For me, it is a toss up between Peter Gunn and the original Hawaii 5-O

I recently put together a list of my 100 favourite instrumentals & the highest themes were the ones to Thunderbirds & Dr Who.

That would have been the next one I mentioned, but decided to keep it to 4 total.

Using the criteria of bring a Billboard hit, the song "I'll Be There for You" from Friends deserves a mention, too. I remember liking it at the time, but I'm not sure how well it holds up. Looking back now it just kind of feels like an average '90s pop song.

The Original Star Trek Theme. Unlike anything before it and pretty much every space show or movie since then has stolen some aspect of the music. I think the first season didn't have the voice over.

Baseball

Two that I can propose:

Hockey Night in Canada Theme. Absolutely iconic for decades.

Barenaked Ladies Theme. As good as modern themes go.

I have always had a soft spot for both the Barney Miller Theme, and the Greatest American Hero theme. Glad to see both were already mentioned.

Now, for my throwaway theme: The Pink Panther Theme. Love it!

No Gilligan's Island?

I suppose it is a bit of a cliche, but it has the same cadence as Amazing Grace, so you can switch lyrics and sing Amazing Grace to the tune of Gilligan's Island, or vice versa.

Also House of the Rising Sun, and a few traditional Christmas carols (O Little Town of Bethlehem and It Came Upon a Midnight Clear to name a few).

Green Acres was my favourite growing up.
I'll second Hawaii 5-0.
For instrumantal, the original Batman score was hard to beat.
