Yeah E.Q, I was annoyed when I called my dentist to get an appointment. She is often sending out things about "now accepting new patients", so I thought maybe I could get in sort of soon. Nope, 6 month wait.

Bob Ross, the artist who used to appear on PBS painting "happy little trees", used to be a Master Sargent in the Air Force before he took up painting. A Sargent yelling at new recruits to scrub the latrine or whatever just seems like the polar opposite of his laid back on camera persona. Here's the article cited by Wikipedia.

Yow!

Patrick Stewart hasn’t won a single Emmy, Golden Globe, or Oscar. In fact, he hasn’t even been nominated for an Oscar. What the hell, academy!? You could have at least given him a nod for Logan...

That the University of Arizona does not have a Natural History Museum, though it does have extensive collections.

Seriously?! I believe I speak for everyone on this messageboard when I say that’s an appalling crime. The guy who gave us Picard, Professor X, possesses the kind of voice that could probably make everything sound classy and refined, even if he was reading a condom ad, AND is one of the few White men who looks good bald, deserves so much better.

I’m glad someone, at least, agrees. At the risk of overreaching, I’m also beggining to think he’s some sort of immortal/ageless entity. Seriously, watch him in I, Claudius, and then watch him in anything recent except for Logan (where he was, regrettably, forced to play an old man) and just see how he compares nigh on forty years later..

Anyway, new thing learned today. The reason Ruined Landscape (from Neverending Story, re: swamp of sadness) and Memories (from Top Gun, re: Goose dying and so on) sound so similar probably has something to do with Giorgio Moroder having worked on the soundtrack for both films. Up until now, I figured that, like cocaine and synth soundtracks, plagiarism was just a common, everyday occurrence in the 1980s film music industry. Heck, look at the theme to Ghostbusters. Straight knock off of I Want a New Drug.

I learned that people don’t know the term “Rube Goldberg Device”.

Isn't there a British term that means the same thing, but it's named for a British guy who also designed those really complicated machines that didn't do a whole lot of anything? I could swear I came across it not too long ago.

I learned today that the roaring and calling of Lions is [i] really [\i] loud. We stayed the night in a lodge at the Big Cat Sanctuary in Kent that has about 15 lions in various groups, A pride, and a few single and batchelor groups and during the night they all make territorial calls that sounds for all the world like they are roaring the word “Lion” over and over again..

They did this about four or five times during the night and it woke us up every time! the 4:15 am shouting match was the most spectacular.

We woke this moring to the seven am shouting match and we were tired but very happy!

That sounds very impressive, Hans. I was at a wolf sanctuary a few years ago when about 40 wolves started having a howl off, with them all finally getting into sync. It was very impressive, and intimidating. I could see how it would be terrifying if the wolves were NOT behind very high fences.

We're going to stay overnight at a wolf sanctuary in two weeks time (in a cabin that is situated right over the enclosure, as seen here)

I'm really excited and hope we will experience something similar to what you describe!

Sperm whales shoot anal syrup at attackers and we don't know exactly what it consists of.

Crash

I just completed a work project that involves handicapped accessibility/ADA. The amount of detail is amazing! Measurements in bathrooms, etc that allow for wheelchair turning, ensuring that a handicapped person can reach things like elevator buttons, toilet paper, etc, and ensuring that the fire alarms have both and audible and visual warning system. The whole thing is simply mind-boggling--so much more than simply installing a ramp or some bars in a toilet stall.

Noble Hunter: eewww!

I'm guessing because no one is willing to volunteer to collect a sample.

And no one has ever considered where they got their name from?

The discoverer was trying to thing up a name and one just came to him?

ETA: Probably he was named by some seamen.

Apparently samples have been collected but got lost and it was sufficiently low priority no one's bothered to make a concerted effort to check.

The whale must have eaten some of his fellows, so it was full of seamen...
