Vibes for success, and for tolerating moving, Sylvanz.

Last week a friend asked if I'd like to accompany her on a trip to Colorado Springs to visit her (grown) niece in April. I was still considering whether it was practical (I was concerned about the airfare, but she had an airline credit I could use for part of it). A couple days ago she told me that for various reasons, she'd decided against flying, and would I be interested in driving out with her? That actually sounds like way more fun to me. I'm starting to look forward to it. If a job comes up in the meantime, I can probably negotiate the time off, and if not, since there's no airline ticket involved, someone else might be able to go in my place.

Oh, road trips are a blast! Have fun, Lainie. Just don't pick up any vanishing hitchhikers!

I went to jury duty on Tuesday and got picked for a jury. It was an interesting experience and I'm glad I did it, even if the reason for trial was depressing.

Bonus: I was able to book a guest house called the Neva Inn. The wonderful woman who probably would have been my friend H's stepmother, had her father lived longer, is named Neva, and at nearly 100, has indicated she's ready to pass. The trip will be a memorial to her.

Friday afternoon, the bus bringing the Stanford basketball team up to play UW burst into flames on I-5 (they all got off safely and no one was hurt on or off the bus). Until the new tunnel opens next week (theoretically), I-5 is the only way other than city streets to go north. I live 13 miles north of where I work.

I pulled out of the parking lot at 3:40pm, and pulled into my driveway at 5:41pm. Even worse, once I managed to get onto the freeway, it only took me 15 minutes to get home. That means it took me 1 hour and 46 minutes to get onto the freeway (because everybody else down here was also trying to get to the freeway). It was not a good afternoon.

Plus, I'd run out of Zyrtec on Thursday, and forgot to buy more, so I was going to stop at the store on Friday. I was so late that I skipped that (because Ferd has to eat by 6 pm because of his medication), and when I went to QFC on Saturday morning, I couldn't get any Zyrtec (because the pharmacy isn't open at 6:30am), so I had to settle for generic Benedryl, and having inadequate antihistamine in my system makes me feel like I have a cold coming on.

Oh, and the cat didn't make it.

Aw, my Mum just passed away. She took a bit of a turn for the worse on the weekend but because she had a scheduled appointment on Tuesday my parents didn't bother contacting anyone and just waited. When she went in to the hospital today they told her the cancer had progressed so fast it had moved into her intestines and was blocking them and there was nothing they could do, and she had at best 3 to 4 days left.

Me and my brother went in as soon as we heard and I ended up sitting with her until 11pm (after the rest of the family had left) when I thought she was settled and was sleeping okay but I got the call less than an hour later. I'm disappointed in myself for not staying longer but there's nothing I can do to change that now.

So sorry to hear about your mum, we'll be thinking about you on this side of the world. Try not to beat yourself up about the timing, you didn't know.

I'm sorry about your mum, GM. Will your dad be okay? And you and your brother? If you waited until she went to sleep, she wouldn't have known you were there if you'd stayed (not much comfort, I know).

GM, I am so sorry!

and yes, of course you couldn't tell about the timing. I doubt that taking her in on the weekend instead of on Tuesday would have made any difference, either.

You were there when she was awake, and she knew that.

I am terribly sorry GM, and agree with the rest that there is no way you could have known, and it is good you stayed as long as you did.

So sorry to hear that, GM. You were there for her; you came as soon as you heard and stayed until she fell asleep. I'm sure that meant a lot to her.
