Snake St. Patrick and the "snakes"

I'm pretty sure this legend was discussed here at some point, but I can't find it in a search of the main site or the forums. I've seen claims on Facebook that the "snakes" St. Patrick was said to have driven out of Ireland were a metaphor for pagans. Was St. Patrick really known for driving out or killing anybody, and have you ever heard (as the poster claimed) that pagans wear snake-themed jewelry on St. Patrick's Day? I always thought it was meant literally and was just another legend of the type that arises around saints.

No, no, it's just an error in the passing of of the verbal legend. It was Saint Potter [ick!] and he drove out all the Slytherins.

I'll do it...

So that would make it Saint Potty's day, then?

Nah, St. Potty gets the days immediately after any large, thirsty celebration.
That's who you pray to.
