"Cement" is a mistranslation based on a misunderstanding of some eastern European languages. They meant to say "semen".
(I would have sworn that I've seen signs with "semen" for "cement" in several countries - I thought the Czech Republic and possibly Turkey at least. Google Translate says I'm wrong, though.) |

If that's true it would give an entirely new meaning to the job of bricklayer.

Hell, the chicken and rice is a staple of pretty much every Southern home. (Not to mention part of a classic "I Love Lucy" episode, thanks to Ricky's Cuban heritage and arroz con pollo.) You even had your choice of how you ate your chicken and rice. Either fry up the chicken and serve rice as a side dish (with an ample portion of chicken gravy on top) or boil the chicken and rice together (more like arroz con pollo is done; I think the seasoning is really the only difference). And chicken isn't an uncommon add-in for a jambalaya or gumbo--and rice is a standard feature of both of those dishes (either in it, for jambalaya, or served with it, for gumbo).

Are there really people out there eating chrysanthemums, goat's livers and cement in the first place?

Actually, you can eat chrysamthemums. Some are bitter and some are peppery. They're like dandandelions in that they're perfectly edible and are best when they're young and tender, but most Americans tend to turn their noses up at them.

I have a recipe for chestnut stuffing that I serve with lamb. Nothing dire has happened to anyone I've served it to. And I think probably everyone on this site has had chocolate and milk together. Some of these foods would be weird together. But I doubt they're fatal
