Icon86 A Happy Meal is forever

McDonald's food not only tastes like plastic, it lasts as long as plastic.

A Denver nutritionist kept a Happy Meal out for a whole year just to see what would happen, and was shocked when the popular fast-food item hardly changed at all.

I wish they still came in the paperboard boxes like that around here. Ours switched to paper bags a long time ago.

I've come across the happy meal boxes sometimes, but I think they use the paper bags like 95% of the time. In regards to this ladys "experiment". I am curious as to how a homemade burger and fries would fare differently. I've found a lot of good healthy food that's basically fossilized instead of decomposing(think veggies and bits of meat) in odd places around the house. Whether a food decomposes or dries out has to do with the conditions it's in, I've found a single hamburger bun in a bag that dried out and I've found the same brand of bun forgotten in a different place(warmer and more humid) turn green and fuzzy. McDonalds food isn't great nutrution to regularly feed your kids(that is a given), but I am not convinced this "test" would look any different with homemade food instead.

If she had it inside in a stable dry climate and without insect access, it doesn't surprise me that nothing really happened to the food.

Based on Supersize Me, I'm skeptical about the hamburger.

Do the glass jars make a difference?

The same guy who did the plastic encapsulated banana I previously posted about, loosely wrapped a burger bun in an ordinary food bag several years ago. It went dry and hard, but despite being in ordinary temperature and humidity it didn't grow any mould. Sadly no photos and he was told to get rid of it (though the local mouse population would probably have broken their teeth on it).

I couldn't even watch that whole thing I was so nauseated.

The glass jars would trap moisture rather than allowing evaporation, so they would make a difference in decomposition.

Swedish media had both the before and the after picture, and there was quite a difference. Also, the colour saturation of the entire photo was different and made it look less inedible.

If one tweaks the saturation so that the plastic bits look the same, it's downright disgusting.

In other words, maybe not a downright fake, but still misleading.

Chef Long Lived Food

Information regarding this phenomenon can be found at:

Searching the site reveals a need for DRY CONDITIONS...

Well, even a raw human body is preserved by dry conditions...

What do you expect from COOKED food?

Bruso, who dedicates her time to convincing parents not to feed junk food to their picky children, said this experiment proves that Happy Meals aren't a healthy snack for kids.
Thank goodness someone finally cracked the code! This woman is truly a revolutionary. I only wonder what would have happened if she'd started the experiment in the middle of summer and left the food in the windowsill of a drafty home without air conditioning. Then the microbes would eat it up, I'm sure, but I never got why humans should only eat things that little bugs would touch. By those guidelines, I'd be better off digging into the litter box than having a happy meal.

I know that a healthy diet is important. I just find this silly.

Also, I once inadvertently left a bag of peppers in the bedroom closet for about six cooler months (yes I don't know how I misplaced them that gravely, I was probably sleepwalking) and they just shriveled up into little recognizable greenish rods. Does this mean they're not real food either?

As my health declined last year, I left most of my Vietnamese multi-color peppers on the plant, and they did basically the same thing. Then again, these are the peppers about which my quipped, "what, do the Vietnamese have something against us?"

I've recently heard of this. The claim goes so far as to say that the food was like 70 years old and was still edible.

Well, there's lots of examples of decades, even centuries old food that is well-preserved through drying. That doesn't mean it's edible or that whoever made it used unnatural ingredients or lots of preservatives. Most of this food simply dried out. For example;

The world's oldest wedding cake - it is 113 years old.

A 118 year old sandwich found in a church organ;

Hardtack - a ship's buscuit from 1852

110 year old tin of chocolate;

112 year old ham

I could go on and on but enough with the pictures, I suppose. Unless someone eats that burger or those fries and says they still taste like they did then they're nothing unusual - lots of really old, dried out food out there. Even if they do, listverse has food decades old that was eaten with no ill effects - including a 120 year old cake Jay Leno took a bit out of on his show. So tales of burgers and fries that have simply dried out are nothing unusual - long before there was a McDonald's this sort of thing happened.
