Judge Judge berates domestic abuse victim, sentences her to jail

http://www.msn.com/en-us/news/world/...B&ocid=U007DHP

Quote:
A Florida county judge berated a domestic violence victim for failing to appear at her alleged abuser's trial and then sentenced the sobbing woman to jail, courtroom video shows.

Seminole County Judge Jerri Collins was captured heartlessly rebuking the pleading woman as she desperately apologizes and says her depression and anxiety kept her from facing her abuser in court.
Quote:
"You think you're going to have anxiety now? You haven't even seen anxiety," Collins says before issuing her decision.
I'm speechless.

Actually, I was a bit. Texas was where the judge sentenced a man to get married for punching his girlfriend's ex-boyfriend.

There's so much wrong here.

The Florida Supreme Court found that Collins had the legal right to jail the woman, but shouldn’t have been so mean.
Well gee, I sure am glad to know that the court has determined that it's acceptable to punish the victim of a crime as long as you don't use belittle them while you're at it.

Glasses

That article does not say it was acceptable, just that it was legally permissible.

I also suggest you read the actual Supreme Court opinion. What is stated in the article does not correspond. All it says about the contempt charge is in a footnote stating that failure to appear (which is admittedly what the victim did) should be treated as indirect criminal contempt, not direct criminal contempt.
