Icon13 Olivia Newton-John's "Physical" banned in Utah

Comment: Several years ago I heard on the radio that radio stations in
Utah would not (or were not allowed to) play Olivia Newton-John's song
'Physical' because of its supposed sexual content. The song is supposed to
be about exercising but its lyrics can be construed as being about sex.
I've been interested in this for a long time.

If they did that, they'd have to ban/refuse to play most of the songs from the 80's.

Does the commentor or anyone who has heard the song really believe it's meant to be about exercising?

I'm saying all the things that I know you'll like
Making good conversation
I gotta handle you just right
You know what I mean
I took you to an intimate restaurant
Then to a suggestive movie
There's nothing left to talk about
Unless it's horizontally
Let's get physical, physical
I wanna get physical

One would think so, but I've found that very few of the "moral" decisions in this state make sense.

I haven't heard this particular one, and I grew up very near Utah. However, it would not surprise me if some station owners refused to play it as is their right as private business owners. Larry H. Miller, owner of the Utah Jazz and of a large theater chain, has refused to air certain movies in his theaters because they offended his sensabilities as an active LDS.

The largest broadcasting company in Utah is Bonneville Communications which is owned and operated by the LDS church. So I could see it happening. If it did, it doesn't seem to have had much impact on her career, though.

I could see this, too. The local CBS affiliate, KBCI, has refused to air the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show on more than one occasion and I remember the NBC station, KTVB, refused to air the cartoon God, The Devil, and Bob.

As a side note: I didn't realize until about a week ago that the Larry Miller that owns car lots here in Boise also owns the Jazz.
