Default Drivers had to stop at green lights during Cultural Revolution.

Quote:
Some Red Guards tried to force traffic to stop at green lights and go on red--the party color, which they said symbolized progress.
I heard this as a child and spotted it online again today. But is it true, and if so, how widespread was it. Maybe it was just an overzealous official trying to make a name for himself.

Ponder

This is sometimes even reported as "In China, a red traffic signal means go." Such as in this Times article, which has a correction at the bottom:

The correction repeats the OP assertion. I study colors and I've heard the claim but I've never seen any support for it.

Sounds like a classic "In China they do things the opposite" UL.

The way I always heard this one was that Mao considered red to be the color of progress, and thus wanted red lights to mean go, but was talked out of it.
