TV Happy 60th Birthday, Kevin Arnold

Happy 60th birthday, Kevin Arnold.

Yes, that’s right, the hero of The Wonder Years celebrates that milestone birthday today.

When I first read the title, I thought "Wait a minute! Fred Savage can't possibly be that old!"

I liked that they didn't have Winnie and Kevin do a "happily ever after" thing. It's always annoyed me when TV shows and books push the first love is the only love agenda. It's not usually true. The Wonder Years reflected my teen years better than most other shows set in that time (with some obvious differences) and I think it would have really bothered me if Winnie and Kevin had gone off into the sunset together especially since I had to check my yearbook to find the last name of my first boyfriend. Considering how many times I dreamily doodled Mrs Sue Hislastname on my hilroys when I was in grade 9 that surprises me somewhat .

It mainly just bothered me because they spent the entire finale working out their relationship and a crappy narration suddenly declares otherwise. It just felt like a lot of time spent on a topic only to nullify it.

I just recently learned this was due to how suddenly the show got cancelled, and something they'd wanted a more conclusive end to became something they had to shoot as open-ended. I guess had they gotten to do the full series or at least intentionally shoot a series finale from the beginning, it would have worked better.
