Icon19 Sesame Street replacing Oscar the Grouch?

Comment: We've recently heard that Sesame Street is replacing Oscar the
Grouch with a 'brainiac owl' because Oscar was considered a bad influence
on children. Please tell us it's not so!

I don't know about a "braniac owl," but I'd like to see a garbage can lid slowly rise...and out pops Dick Cheney.

Problem is, Dick Cheney is clearly a bad influence on children.

Yeah, but he could come up, and, like, shoot Big Bird in the face. Oscar couldn't do that.

Well it would certainly add an extra level of danger to Sesame Street.

In October Sesame Street featured a bit with Mike Rowe from Dirty Jobs and Oscar. This doesn't exactly speak to the OP but it shows they sure aren't phasing Oscar out.

You can find the bit on YouTube.

I think Oscar isn't bad enough actually. Instead of Oscar the Grouch, I want to see Oscar the Troubled, Bitter Loner.

The song " I Love Trash" is probably not very environmentally friendly.

Oscar couldn't do that because Big Bird and Oscar are both played/voiced by the same puppeteer, Caroll Spinney. It would be suicide!

Am I the only one who's read The Wisdom of Big Bird (and the Dark Genius of Oscar the Grouch): Lessons from a Life in Feathers?

Oscar was also a prominent part of a "ecology and conservation" program that was on the news in Toronto last mont (Nov)..

I think he is moving more to a "green" purpose.. not being replaced..

Getting rid of Oscar would definitely be a deal-breaker for me.

No Oscar,
No Watcher!

Baby Bear on the other hand....

I'm so glad I'm not the only one who despises that little NFBSK.

Ohhh, I cannot stand his constant whining!

Telly whines constantly but at least he has personality.

But Oscar will always be one of my favorites. I have a whole ornament set I bought many, many years ago for Sesame Street (one for Disney as well). I haven't taken them out in years but they are coming out this year.

The Oscar one is so cute. He is in his trash can with it wrapped in a string of lights. Of all the ornaments, that's the only one I can recall clearly. Except my Dumbo one

You know, when Newt Gingrich first hit the national stage, I kept thinking he looked like somebody else I'd seen before, but I couldn't quite place it. And then one day it hit me - Oscar the Grouch.

I love snopesters! I could have posted that on any other board, and no one would have realized why Oscar couldn't shoot Big Bird.

BTW, according to Dave Goelz and Steve Whitmire (who play, respectively, Gonzo and Kermit, among others), Caroll Spinney, now in his mid-seventies, is in great shape because of the physical demands of playing Big Bird.

Damn the political correctness NFBSKs constantly destorying our childhoods! DAMN THEM!

No, I agree, Baby Bear, Telly need to go. I'm not a big fan of Zoe either.

But if they take off Oscar... Who would be next? Snuffy?

Yeah! DAMN THEM for having baseless rumours being spread about them! Those NFBSKs!

... oh, wait. That's not really their fault, is it.

Also, hands off Telly. He is awesomesauce.

Maybe it was a actually a test to see how replacing Oscar with Mike Rowe would go...
