I believe it is possible to make a car that get 100 mpg with today's technology. We just have to make a lot of scarifies to cars performance and luxuries as well as weight.
I do have problems believing that some device, simple technology change or readily available fuel it just sitting there waiting to be used. I have a lot more trouble believing that there is some sorta conspiracy do such a good job of covering it up all these years. |

Ever since the Arab embargos of the early '70s, we've all heard various stories of a myraid of devices that supposedly enable an existing car to go many more miles on a gallon of gas. 100mpg carb-you-rettors, cow magnets, vortex generators, ad-nauseam. All, supposedly bought out and suppressed by the auto companies.
OK, let's look at this from the auto manufacturer's point of view. In the current economic climate, if General Motors introduced a lineup of vehicles that was as big, and comfortable, and full of accessories/options/safety features (Air bags, internal bracing for impacts, anti-skid/stability systems.) as their current lineup, yet was able to obtain three to four times the gas mileage as their current offerings, do you think people would buy those cars? You betcha they would! Do you think the corporate brass at GM knows this? You betcha they do! These gizmos are always portrayed as being absurdly simple and obvious. Yet they never quite seem to measure up. |

Whenever I read these fantasies I can never figure out why people equate the car makers with the oil companies.
Or am I missing something if a car company could make a car that got a bajillion miles to a drop of gasoline of course they would build it after all they don't care how much gasoline is bought. Now if we were talking about auto parts that never broke it would be a whole different story. |
