Because it's fun? Theatre isn't necessarily such a high-brow affair, and throwing stuff at the performers might be more entertaining than the play itself.

I acted so tragic the house rose like magic
The audience yelled "You're sublime"
They made me a present of Mornington Crescent
They threw it a brick at a time...

Years I've waited to use that on snopes, absolute donkey's years.

That's pretty much the way I see it. We aren't talking about the Royal Ballet, here – more vaudeville and music hall, where I suppose it could be guaranteed that at least one act per night was going to be bad enough that it could only be improved by a volley of vegetables.

You need to consider the audience, too. You've got to remember that these were just simple working folk. These were people of the factories and tenements. The common clay of the cities. You know... morons.
