It was nice to have some good news on the television when I turned it on this morning. I hope he gets a nice long sentence.

Not really. If it is felt that a sentance is too lenient then an appeal can be made over the sentence. The High Court will then review the sentence. In addition the UK has a Supreme Court which decides on matters of law. The court does not decide on guilt, but once the facts have been established they will decide on what action should be taken.

Pistorius has been denied leave to appeal to the Constitutional Court. That's the highest court in the country, so this puts an end to any chance of overturning his conviction. There could still be another round of appeals about his sentence, though.

South African Olympic athlete Oscar Pistorius has been sentenced to six years in prison for the murder of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp in 2013.

Far too lenient but at least he is going to be in jail for a few years anyway.

South African court doubles Oscar Pistorius's prison sentence

Quote:
The supreme court of appeal (SCA) increased Pistoriusís sentence from six years in prison to 13 years and five months.

[...]

The athlete was not in court for Fridayís ruling, where the court handed down the minimum 15-year sentence prescribed for murder in South Africa, then subtracted the years Pistorius ha already served in jail.
