WW2 soldiers taught to read and write in 6 weeks

Is there any truth in the story that I heard years ago, that during World War 2, illiterate US soldiers were taught to read and write basic English in 6 weeks. I saw this in one of those silly "you can do it if you set your mind to it" books, and they are always suspect.
