Vanishing Members List

Me, I'm really very happy to see a "members list" (honestly!), but I did want to note that you can access this when you're not logged in.

This isn't particularly bothersome to me, but I anticipate that our more private posters -- those who wish to keep some aspects of their true identities hidden -- might not be particularly pleased to know that non-registered readers can view the members list. (Perhaps that this is something snopes had intended to tinker with before the board goes public.)

By the way, if you happened to have entered your complete name in your profile, be aware that this information is available to everyone who looks at the members list. It looks like you can edit your name down to your first name, if you'd prefer to conceal your surname, so that’s easily fixable. (I'm not sure how administrators are keeping track of posters' full names, however. I can't remember this aspect of the registration process.)

Also, I've noticed that large photos in member profiles seem to screw up the formatting of the members list when you're viewing this while logged in. Large photos seem to scrunch the columns on the right way over to the right.

On a general note (I didn't know where to put this), I wanted to say that I'm really happy with this board software and its features. (The Straight Dope currently uses the same software for its message board and -- while I don't post there often -- I've never had a problem posting there.)

I'm pretty much “text-based” when I post to the board, so I won't be any help in testing graphic features (such as avatars), but I did want to give this experiment an enthusiastic thumbs-up.

Thanks, snopes, for working on this on our behalf.

I've taken out my profile pic until I can get back home and tinker with the size. I had noticed that, too., Bonnie.

Computer

I've disabled the ability of non-registered users to view the Member List.

The problem with the profile pictures is that the same photo (in the same dimensions) is displayed in the user's profile and in the Members List, so it needs to be fairly small (even though I'd prefer to allow members to put larger pictures in their profiles). So I have to determine the maximum photo size that will work well with both.

When I was looking at the members list I just noticed that Bonnie has 5 whole posts! I don't think she's worked her way up to positive numbers, so does this mean the new software doesn't allow you to set her post count to a negative number?

Yes, everything in this board is database-driven, and the Post Count field of the database doesn't accept negative numbers, so it just resets to zero.

I assume it probably also doesn't accept non-integer numbers, either, right?
