Comment: Brad Meltzer's novel "The Inner Circle" suggests that the Library
of Congress has an unofficial catalog category for "X-rated" books deemed to be pornographic or prurient. He states that is why W, X, and Y are not part of the LC catalogue system (I and O are also absent). He states that those wishing those books (or movies) must ask at the desk and they are delivered from behind the desk. This seems poppycock to me. Looking at the term "X-rated" on line, it is said the term wasn't used until 1970, far later than the Library of Congress system was 'invented'. |

Not commenting on W-Y, but a more likely explanation for I and O is to avoid them being misread or mistyped as 1 and 0. (I know the same is true of VIN's.)
