well different countries and all but I am on a disablity penison and there is no doubt I would be better off working. Much better off

Looking at me, you wouldn't guess I am disababled because it is an intellectual one but even having a day to day conversation with me you would get that. My problem is my memory. It is pretty bad due to Epilepsy. (Well technically brain damage from my first fit.)

I recenlty did some intelligence tests as part of my assesment to see if surgery is possible. In most areas I am average to above average to well above average. Except in memory where I am limited to extremely limited.

I can't speak for the US but there a plenty of people in Australia who think people on benefits are just laughing it up at the system and living high.

Me I would love to work full time and complete my studies. But it hard to study or start a new job when your memory is so bad. There is a whole rant that could go here but I will save that for another day. (actually several rants.)

so basically
1. a disability is not always obvious
2. Benefits aren't that generous
3. Disablity benefits aren't easy to get.

I am already depressed enough without this sort of attitude.
So

Amen, Dasla. These sorts of stories and comments always bug me to no end. Disability is NOT easy to get by any means, and the amount you get certainly isn't generous.

She said the gov't sends her $1500.00 a month in 1 check. And she gets $700.00 a month on an EBT card (food stamps), and $800.00 a month for rent.

Oh yeah, and 250 minutes free on her phone.

That is just south of $3500.00 a month.
Nearly $500 for 250 minutes of calls? I know contracts are ridiculously expensive over here, but not quite as bad as that.

If you multiply that by millions of people, you start to realize the scope of the problem we face as a country.
Once the socialists have 51% of the population in that same scenario, we are finished.
Does the person who came up with this think that everyone on social security has a single employed benefactor who earns just enough to pay their benefits in taxes?

For starters, SNAP benefits for a single person has a maximum of 200 dollars. To get seven hundred dollars in food stamps, you need to be a family of five. Mind you, this is the maximum amount - any income whatsoever would reduce that.

Second, Section 8 housing vouchers (I'm assuming that's what the person was talking about) are not given as money. The person who gets the voucher pays thirty percent of their income as rent and the remainder is paid to the landlord or company by the government. You don't get to handle any of that money.

Third, there are two different Social Security disability programs. SSI is for those unable to work and have not "earned" the requisite amount of time working to get the other program, SSDI. SSI currently is 698 dollars for a single person over eighteen and 1,048 dollars for a couple. It can go up for cost of living increases at the beginning of the year, but I don't know if that's done every year. SSDI is given by how much you have paid into the system, for a maximum of 150% of that amount. So it's possible she could get that much per month, but only for so long as her work history would allow.

Sister "but hey, it's easy to blame the annoying disabled poor" Ray
