My plan is to make roast chicken, wild rice, and salad but someone is still bottling his cider. I thought I could start the first two since they take close to an hour but DH doesn't want the extra heat in the kitchen while he's working. Might just be pizza.

I am not comfortable frying foods in oil, and I love chicken fried steak with pepper and milk gravy.

J was supposed to come over for football today and make it for me, but he got called into an overnight shift, so he had to cancel.

I decided to take a big chance and try to make it myself. I've only really started cooking on a regular basis in the past six months, and have surprised myself with my latent ability, so I figured it couldn't be horrid.

It was fantastic! Everything came out just about perfect. I should have boiled the potatoes longer before mashing them, and should have done those last so they were hotter, but, other than that, it was a total success!

I only eat this dish once or twice a year, but it's nice to know I can make it myself. Next challenge: fried catfish, sauteed greens, and cheese grits. But I think I've had enough fried food for quite some time so that can wait.

A portobello mushroom stuffed with pesto, peppers, and cheese. And a white wine spritzer.

Congratulations! Like you, we don't have it often, but when we do, yum!

Marty's not well so I think I'll make chicken noodle soup tonight.

Last night I had a lamb biriani with some stewed vegetables, the same as the night before (although I made the biriani fresh both nights).

It's not a "proper" biriani because I tend to just make up the recipe, but with a few adjustments it seems to be turning out OK. Soften half an onion in some ghee with a teaspoon of cumin seeds. Add some diced lamb (I used rump steaks this time but you can get scraggy old bits as well - you'd just need to cook it longer) and brown it and cook it slowly for a few minutes. Then add three or four cardamon pods, a couple of cloves, some turmeric for colour, and rice. Stir it all up, add twice as much water as rice and cook the rice. You can turn the heat off (on an electric hob which stays hot) and put the lid on when the water's almost gone, for the last five or ten minutes.

The vegetables were just stewed pepper, aubergine, onion, courgette and garlic, so fairly plain but it worked. I didn't try to spice them up this time because I usually get it wrong. If I was trying to do a "vegetable curry" sauce I'd not have used those vegetables, and I'd have put some potato in. Sometimes I cook some aubergine as a separate dish, but that never works as well as I think it should either, so I didn't this time.

It's not like I mix sixteen types of beans -- they come that way.

I just don't use the artificial-ham-flavor-that-is-actually-just-a-lot-of-salt packet that comes with.

ETA: Tonight was pasta primavera: bok choi, leeks, carrots, garlic, roasted red peppers, capers and olives, tossed in olive oil, with fettucini. Just a bit of finely-grated peccorino romano on top. And parsley.

Italian sausage, red, yellow and orange peppers, onions and mushrooms, with my homemade marinara. Mixed with rigatoni, covered with mozzarella and provolone and baked.

Tonight we'll have the last of the scalloped potatoes and ham, compliments of the baked ham from Wednesday.

Creamed chicken and veggies over biscuits. It's one of our favorites, and since we've been out of town by turns and it takes some time with all the chopping and such I haven't made it in months. So I'm looking forward to this--and my girlfriend is doing the chopping, so I'm doing well.

Roast pork seasoned with garlic, pepper, and herbes de Provence, green bean casserole (made with garden beans), mashed redskin potatoes, and warm applesauce made from the apples we picked last week.

I had veggie chili and brown rice. Out of a tin and a boil in the bag, but water had to be boiled and chili heated, so that's cooking in my book.

Spaghetti and meatballs (leftover from yesterday). Yesterday I put the frozen meatballs into jarred sauce and simmered until hot. Not normally really considered cooking, but I burned my arm, so it therefore counts.

That would be better if it read "Pasta with vodka sauce. Unfortunately I was out of sauce. And pasta".

I had some ratatouille with fishcakes (The fishcakes were bought, I made the ratatouille last night). This was after some barbecue pork in a bun, and a chorizo sausage hot-dog that I ate at a piss-up in a brewery that I had been attending.
