For years, I thought tobacco smoke was one of my big three asthma triggers, the others being viral infections and heavy exercise. Then in college I accidentally took a drag off someone's tobacco pipe, and nothing happened. (I was smoking pot with a bunch of people, and we were passing pipes around in a circle; I didn't realize that one of the pipes contained tobacco until I'd taken a big hit and held it in for a few seconds.) Secondhand cigarette smoke still bothered me, although not as much as it had when I was a child. I concluded that it wasn't actually tobacco that triggered my attacks, but one of the hundred or so other chemicals that are added to cigarettes.
