Comment: How To Solve The Burqua Problem
For those struggling to ban women from wearing Burqua in their countries, Mustafa Kamal, who has a nickname of "Attaturk" and who is the founder of modern Turkey resolved the problem in a very wise way. He issued the following decree: "With immediate effect, all Turkish women are privileged to wear whatever they choose, however, all prostitutes must wear a burqua!!! The very next day, no women in Turkey were seen in a burqua. |

I think someone has totally missed the point. However, as Asar Nafisi pointed out in Reading Lolita in Tehran, head-to-toe coverings can be erotic to many men. The veil shifts, a tan line is revealed, and suddenly this is a reason why women can't go to college with men, because it's so sexual (the tan line on one's forehead).
We need an eye roll smiley that rolls its eyes so hard it's head snaps in half or something. |

Anyway, the story in the OP is pile of BS, if you ask me.
![]() Atatürk did away with most symbols of the old Ottoman Empire and created a modern, secular state without having to use such tricks. Meanwhile, in this week's Egyptian elections, female candidates of the Salafist party (it's mandatory for every party to present candidates of both sexes) appear on posters only in the form of a logo, or run under their husband's name. Welcome to the XXIst Century, which not so long ago was dreamt of as a time of progress. Last edited by Cyrano; 29 November 2011 at 11:24 AM. |

Along similar lines, here is a quote from the autobiography of Casanova, written over 200 years ago. He is describing his travels in Spain and has this little trivia:
"Those who wore 'braguettes' were imprisoned and all tailors making breeches with 'braguettes' were severely punished... The matter was settled when an edict was published and affixed to the doors of all the churches, in which it was declared that breeches with braguettes were only to be worn by the public hangmen. The fashion passed away as no one wanted to be mistaken for the public executioner." Proof that there is nothing new under the sun and that urban legends have been around for a long time. (BTW a braguette was a flap in front of a man's pants to cover the genital.) |
