I checked the county government's website earlier (I tried to post a response then, but the server was copping an attitude). Anyway, a budget summary did not say anything about any federal funds for fire/rescue, or for any other county agency for that matter. It just listed what the FY13 budget was for various county departments and agencies. That doesn't mean that federal funds aren't granted, but my general impression is that the county fire/rescue monies come from property taxes, and the last time I checked, that was an appropriate use of local/state tax money. I do know that the county is trying to get an ambulance fee law passed again. That proposal reared its head about two years ago and was defeated at the ballot box. I was in the local Wendy's a day or two ago and was approached by a volunteer fireman with a petition to put this question to the voters (again). I asked him whether or not the volunteer fire dept was funded by property taxes--he didn't know. I just have the impression that they are, and I suggested that he research my question.

Federal money is used for some fire and safety related spending.
Homeland security dispensed (is dispensing?) a large amount of money to various fire and emergency preparedness entities. Around me, Homeland Security funded a large number of Tornado sirens and bought specialized "command center" vehicles for the fire department for disaster response. So there is some federal money going to firefighters, but AFAIK that money is rarely (never?) used in ways as direct as paying salaries. I seem to recall federal money has been used to pay local police salaries. |

Unless your bone-headed, half-witted, well-coiffed, hard-hearted, lizzard-blooded, feeble-minded, bubble-brained out-of-touch boob of a governor rejects it because he doesn't want to comply with the restrictions and requirements that come with it. This followed by millions of dollars destroyed in wild fires that can't be put out.

Amen, Gayle. What she said, but about our own Gov. Lord Voldemort who rejects federal money, and spends tax payer money defending his stupid policies in court.
