Is it now an Aries due to the shift in constellations?
PS. Isn't the known value of pi always changing as it gets calculated to more and more digits? |

Comment: i am wondering what snopes.com has to say about the golden ratio
and fibonacci numbers. do they really exist in nature like everyone says? |

Sure they exist in nature. Any number series or ratio can be found if you look hard enough.
Usually, though, the Fibonacci series found in nature end after just a few numbers, and thus proves very little. Most cases I've seen people pointing at has only two successive numbers from the series, which, to my mind, proves nothing. As for ratios, while they can often be found, they'll be approximate, which, once again, makes the evidence pretty weak. Some ratios are different, though, such as pi and sqrt(2), and are commonly found with great precision. The same goes for some ratios in crystal proportions, for example. |

Comment: The truth is that eggs are EASIER to balance during an equinox. I
gave 25 seventh graders eggs to balance. For about ten minutes most of the class was successful at balancing raw eggs. Before and after the time of the equinox, only a few kids could do it. I have an explanation/hypothesis to explain my observation. The equinox is the only time that both of Earth's rotational poles are exactly the same distance from the center of the sun. The rest of the year one pole is closer and that creates a tiny bit of disequlibrium. Sure people can balance eggs anytime but it is easier during the equinox. Try it with a large group. My conclusion is that egg balancing is not folklore. |

Comment: This is in reference to your write up on the Passat and its gas millage in the UK as compared to the US. When you say that the English gallon represents 1 and the US gallon comparison is 1.2, you go on to say that is why the car gets better millage in the UK. It is just the opposite as 1.2 is greater, providing more gas so as to obviously produce MORE millage. You may wish to take a refresher course in math. |

See if they are running any specials on spelling refreshers while you are at it and maybe send this person a coupon or something.

Comment: Regarding your article "Flush Bosh", which critiqued the notion
that the coriolis effect dictated the direction of rotation of drainage in small bodies of water: sorry guys, you blew it on this one. The coriolis effect is in no way dependent on the scale of the fluid medium it is affecting, and draining water (or any other fluid "low") does in fact change direction depending on whether it is north or south of the equator. I've tested and demonstrated this on multiple occasions while crossing the equator in a submarine, where the motion of surface waves is negligible. The effect is surprisingly dramatic. North of the equator, even very close to the equator, the water in a basin (on submarines, we never use the "S-word") drains counterclockwise. At the very moment of crossing the equator it drains straight down, and then a second later begins rotating clockwise. Using internal telephones with the navigation center, we can "mark" the moment the water runs straight down, and our latitude by SINS or GPS is always 0° 00.00'. |

No, you can't. If there were a difference, it would not be measureable at the equator. Any difference would get bigger the further from the equator you went.
The water in my bathtub and the basin a metre away flow out in different directions. It has everything to do with the design of the vessel rather than the rotation of the Earth. |

What the digits in base 10 happen to work out to be are essentially meaningless trivia. You could start from scratch calculating a bunch of the digits in base 37 rather than 10, but it wouldn't tell us anything new about the value of it. |

The really cool thing about pi is its hex expansion, which lets each digit be calculated independent of the rest.

The same is true for binary. I believe the largest known digit is in binary, which used to be the quadrillionth binary digit - a zero. (But I agree with Errata that the number itself is well known. It's just a matter of representing it, which doesn't have to be with digits.)

Comment: Your article protecting obama and the amount of executive orders he has signed is comparing "8" years of service with former presidents to "3 and 1/2" years of service for obama. We know you love saving his behind whenever you can, but don't make it so obvious. |
