I have a big heavy stainless Tag Heuer automatic chronograph, cost about like a Gibson LesPaul. Bought it in 2002 (nearly 10 years now, wow) and have worn it every day other than a couple times I sent it in for clean&adjustment. I like the weight. I tried a couple titanium Omega, I like how they look too, but I like the 180g block of stainless. A 180g block of gold would be around chf$10,000 today, so if you buy a watch really made of solid gold, that's what you're paying for. |

My last self-winding watch (not a Rolex, though) was electric.

How does that work?
With a automatic, there's a swinging weight driven by waving your arm around that winds the main spring, and then something in the ratchet machanism that prevents overwinding. You can also wind it by hand, but I never have. |
