Snow on top should be a good clue that it is not a living creature.

Duh, it's an ice monster. Lagarfljótsormur is the reason why Iceland is so cold.

So America has bigfoot, Nepal has the abominable snowman, and apparently, Iceland has... a giant worm... monster. Seriously.
Ho ho, those funny Icelanders with their silly giant worm monsters, not like America's sensible bigfoot! And they still talk of trolls, and elves! That probably means they believe in them! Don't they know that the angels chased those things away years ago?

Did anybody else think there was an oddly patronising tone to that report? OK, it's about a Loch Ness Monster equivalent, but the reporter even makes a "funny foreigners" joke about the name of the airport. Ho ho, they don't speak English in Iceland! And I doubt everybody in Iceland suddenly believes in this thing any more than anybody else does...

Hasn't this already been explained as a net that is stuck on something floating on the surface of the streaming water?
