To be completely fair without knowing why I'm giving the benefit of the doubt to people I don't know, it's not stupidity. It's a combination of lack of understanding of unfamiliar aspects of Internet communication and a lack the kind of judgment that would cause other people to look a little further into the situation to avoid looking like a bit of an arse.

ETA: and in their defense... even if they do look like bits of an arse, it's the nicer, fleshier, peachy bits.

Computer

Comment: I received an email stating - "you can google the author, kitty
werthmann, on snopes.com to verify its accuracy. i did." and the
snopes.com was a link - the link led me to a site that has your logo and
the entire story was there. I went to your website and typed in the "Kitty
Werhmann" and your website said no results for this search. I'm telling
you this because I think someone may be using your logo and creating their
own fake verification site. Thank you for all you do to help us discern
fact from fiction. Just a heads up in case there are scammers out there.

Comment: A cousin posted a message on Facebook about the National Defense
Authorization Act section 1031. It seemed suspicious so I searched for it
on Google. The fifth item that came up was this:

National Defense Authorization Act - snopes.com
message.snopes.com Urban Legends Politics
3 posts - 2 authors - Last post: Nov 29
The language appears in sections 1031 and 1032 of the NDAA bill. I would
also point out that these provisions raise serious questions as ...

The tag at the end of the first line makes it look like it's your website.
Then I noticed that its URL is MESSAGE.snopes.com,
not WWW.snopes.com. In case this is someone trying to masquerade as you, I
thought you should know about it.

Thank you for pointing that out. If I were you, I wouldn't trust anything anyone has written on THAT website. A quick look at this message pseudo-snopes website, it is obviously written by cads and bounders.

It has come up more than once as I've googled different topics trying to
check their veracity.

Comment: I googled an email +snopes to see if it was true. Your site said
it is. I followed another link that took me to http://message.snopes.com/
It appears to me that this site is a fake. Please let me know.

Comment: When I did a google search for your address, one link redirected
me to a site claiming to be snopes that wanted payment for "services
rendered"

I wanted to alert you to the possible spoofing of your site.

Comment: After reading an article about Huma Abedin being Hillary
Clinton's top aid and that she is directly connected to the Muslim
Brotherhood, I googled it and came up with the following link:

http://message.snopes.com/showthread.php?t=81280

But I couldn't find anything actually about it on your site but this link
indicates "snopes.com" on the url.
