Thanks to the Compare the Market ads, there are a lot of people wanting meerkats as pets. Because these are not generally available to members of the public, meerkats have been stolen from wildlife parks. When i worked at the cat shelter we had a spate of British Blue shorthairs brought in - bought after owners saw the Sheba adverts and discarded when the owner saw some other animal in adverts/films.

Birds of prey are frighteningly easy to get hold of here. We have several raptor rescue organisations and they've some horror stories about the conditions the birds have been rescued from. Many end up being destroyed because the owners feed them raw meat and they don't get enough calcium for their bones to form properly; by the time they are rescued they have deformed limbs and are beyond saving

I don't have a cite, but from memory there was a bit of a increase in the buying of cute little pink piglets and people were shocked, shocked I tell you, with the size and nature of a full grown pig. But that is just from memory.

Well, I have the sweet little stuffed toy Babe, a really cute toy Seabiscuit, and a really nice Pogo that I got 50 years ago. No, I never bought real pigs, horses or opossums.
