Comment: I'm not sure if this can be verified, however I heard a rumor
several years ago that the computer company Wang Laboratories intended to launch a computer called the King, i.e. the "Wang King". A couple of Google searches reveal that this rumor is still evident: http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/t...&t=525814&i=40 http://www.axisnova.com/articles/use...te_paper.shtml |

The related version I know involves the company setting up its German base in the city of Cologne, and instructing staff to answer the phones by saying "Wang, Cologne".

This story is 100% true. Only it was a pop group. And it was Chung, not King.

I remember an article in Electronics Australia back in the 80's that carried this - but it wasn't a sepcific computer, more of a slogan for a tradeshow. They included a picture of one of the reps wearing a T-shirt with the phrase Wang King on it.

That doesn't make any sense to me as a slogan. However, at the time there was a Wang King Development Ltd. in East Asia, which I think was a subsidiary of the same Wang group. Maybe the event was sponsored by or related to that subsidiary.

I grew up in my grandparents' house. They were named Wang, and my beloved grandfather was named Harry. Yes, in those days of no callerID and everyone in the phone book, kids did call him and inquire about his name' s health.

I always liked the furniture store named Sofa King, myself. "It's not just good -- it's Sofa King good!"
