Crescent, that was my thought. I doubt Stalin thought nearly so highly of the US, and I doubt even more that he thought our "spiritual life" (or anyone else's, FTM) was a significant source of strength.

It's backwards anyway. It starts from the assumption that Stalin would acknowledge that he was evil, and was trying to destroy healthy things. The implication is that he wanted to make the USA "sick" like the USSR, and wasn't afraid to tell his cronies because they'd all agree. I doubt that's the way he would have put it...

Just last summer the ever-helpful BrianB took a stab at this establishing the authenticity of this attribution.

Apparently, we can't blame this on The Naked Communist:

Strange that Stalin's daughter defected to the US, albeit long after her father died.

It's actually a quote from the Spanish Inquisition.
“America is like a healthy body and its resistance is three fold: its patriotism, its morality, its spiritual life, and its commitment to -- four fold: its patriotism, its morality, its spiritual life, its commitment to democracy, and . . . Five fold. I'll start again." |

Out of curiosity, why do you find it strange? Children often grow up to hold widely different views from their parents, even to strongly oppose their parents.

My guess is we can blame some sort of New Right group, based on this letter to the editor from 1986. It cites the Naked Communist, but indicates that all this information came from an article by the "Intercessors of America."
Intercessors of America was a group founded by Arizona congressman John Conlan and Bill Bright (of Campus Crusade for Christ) in 1974. It didn't last too long, but it would have been active in the 1980s. See this. But I think there is a group doing business as that name now. |
