D'oh! Do not pump gas on May 15th (myspace)

This was in a bulletin on myspace today... I used to think better of this girl...

Quote:
DO NOT PUMP GAS ON MAY 15TH...

On May 15th all myspace members are to not go to the gas station in protest high gas prices. Gas is now over $3.00 a gallon in most places. There are 72, 110, 073 members currently on the network, and the average car takes about 20 to 30 dollars to fill up. If all myspace members did not go to the pump on the 15th it would take $2, 163, 302, 190.00 out of the oil companys pockets for just one day, so please do not go to the gas station on May 15th and lets try to put a dent in the oil industry for at least one day.

If you agree (which I cant see why you wouldnt) repost this bulletin repost it with "Don't pump gas on May 15th,2007"

Who comes up with this stuff?
I honestly don't think the oil industry is going to notice. As much as I am pro-environment and pro-alternative fuels, I just don't think this is going to do any good.

Anyways, I was hoping for a good comeback bulletin in response to this one...

Tell them that it will have the same shattering impact on the oil companies that all the previous "Don't buy gax on X day" campaigns have had.

As far as I can see, people who drive will still need to fill their cars. If they obey this , it will just make a surge in the days before or after. It won't alter the amount of gas used or sold.

As for the alledged 72 million members of MySpace, I'm guessing not all have access to a car or can drive.

Don't go to the gas station on the 15th, just fill up on the 14th or 16th instead. Yeah riiiiiight that's going to work.
I notice they don't advocate not using your car as much, thus saving money putting a dent in the oil mens wallets and helping the enviroment.

Want to save on gas prices take the bus or better yet walk.

Exactly my problem with it lazerus. One day of not buying gas is not going to make any difference to the oil companies.

This is about the least effective and laziest way to "put a dent in the oil industry".

D'oh!

This is another "fart in a hurricane" gesture.....

Of course, if everyone started using less gas, say 30% less...over time, it would make a difference....

This has been going around on Myspace as the self appointed Myspace crap poster, I have been sending the mainpage to everyone that posts this. It's also from last year, I haven't gotten any hate mail back yet! I wonder if they even drive

OMG! I see the title has (myspace) in it...((smiles))

$3.00 a gallon? That's what, £1.50? I don't run a car, so I don't know exactly how much petrol costs over here, but I'm pretty sure it's more than that.

In the USA (per GasBuddy.com), gasoline is averaging $2.87 a gallon. In Southern California the average is $3.29.

Yes, we pay less for petrol than the UK.

$1.00 USD = £0.50 GBP
1 US Gal = 3.79L

1 US gal of gas = $2.87
1 US gal of gas = £1.43
1 L of gas at US price = £0.38

Gas was a little more than double that, IIRC, when we were in London in September.

A us gallon is smaller than a UK gallon (about 0.83 of a UK gallon), but petrol here is about 91p per litre = £4.13 per UK gallon or £3.42 per US gallon. Or $6.78 per US gallon.

Allow for my rounding.

A whole lot more. While in London, my kids & I did the calculations and we were all astonished at how much you pay. Paris was the same. Heck if we had to pay that much, I might consider getting a smaller car....

You might have noticed that a lot of us have got smaller cars.

My car may not be a dream machine, but 65 mpg*
suits me just fine.

*Imperial gallons.

Yea, we did notice. Actually, Paris has smaller cars that London, but both have MUCH smaller cars than Atlanta. That was part of the "trip"; coming back to the US and seeing all of the monster trucks on the road here. Made us all feel a little sad (and embarrassed).

This is the MySpace bulletin I got today-

Quote:
"Don't pump gas ever again, Forever"

in April 1997, there was a "gas out" conducted nationwide in protest of gas prices.
Gasoline prices dropped 30 cents a gallon overnight.

From now on, all myspace members are asked to not go to a gas station ever again in protest of
high gas prices. Gas is now over $3.00 a gallon in most places.

There are 73,000,000+ American members currently on the myspace network, and the
average car takes about 20 to 30 dollars to fill up.

If all myspace members did not go to the pump ever again, it would take
$2,200,000,000,000,000,000.00 (that's QUINTILLION) out of the oil companys pockets,
so please do not go to the gas station ever again and lets try to put a dent in the
Middle Eastern oil industry forever.

If you agree (which I cant see why you wouldnt) repost this bulletin repost it with
'Don't pump gas ever again, forever'
I don't recall a "gas-out" in April of 97 and the only page I found was the one 4K posted above.

What never? How the hell does that work? Or are myspace members being encouraged to drive their vehicles until they run dry, then never drive them again? As a person who desn't have a myspace account I am eagerly looking forward to taking advantage of the glut of cheap used vehicles sold on by ethical myspace users. Even if I have to bring my own petrol can. Or does this idea come with plans on how to drill for your own crude and build your own refinery in your backyard?

The only thing I can possibly see from a "don't buy petrol on day x" embargo is a slight inconvenience to the petrol sation staff. On day x, they are sitting around bored out of their minds, then on day x+1 they have to deal with twice the usual amount of customers.

It's something we call "humor."

Obviously this scheme would have to involve Montgomery Burns agreeing to part with a couple of the quintillion-dollar bills he's hoarding.
